I just released generatedata.com 3.2.0, which includes a long-awaited feature: a REST API to allow programmatic generation of data sets. Yay! Great to see this sucker finally out the door.
Note: this new feature won’t be added to the public site – it’s intended for your own installations of the script only. The main generatedata.com offers a service where you can donate and get an account on the site. This is really just intended as a quick convenience and a way for people to contribute to the script. The downloadable version has all the functionality – and now more.
You can find the latest 3.2.0 tag on the github repo, and the new API functionality documented here. Enjoy! :)
Hello Ben,
thank you for your Work! The Tool is very nice! But one thing I miss, and I miss this in all Tools. Is there a way to import table definitions to generatedata?
My Idea is, There is a Form, where I can insert the database connection data. Say which tables should be import and than the Column Titles creates automaticly. So I only say which data type I want, say generate and import the generated Data to MySql. Now I must do all by hand, which need a lot of time.
Thank you
The credit card number data type that is in the online version, doesn’t seem to be present in the downloadable version.
I’m hoping this wasn’t intentional. I was getting ready to jump for joy as I need it for a school project.
I hope I can get this ASAP.
Thanks
Hey Valdeck, there were two different CC number Data Types, so the latest version removes the older one, I think… I believe there’s a new section called Credit Card Data that includes numerous different credit-card related options: PAN, PIN, CVV, Track 1 + 2.
Let me know if you don’t see anything.

Just wanted to say thanks for the great tool. Cheers and continue with the great work.
Thanks, Yanosh. :)
Your tool is simply fantastic. Very well designed, works flawlessly. After having used it extensively, I have a couple of suggestions for minor enhancements:
1) It would be nice if the random word generator field type had a switch for capitalization and/or punctuation removal. For example, in the current version, if you configure a random word field with a length 4 words, you get output like ‘ulla becit. Podest numerator’. Would be nice to be able to force the output to ‘Ulla Becit Podest Numerator’
2) For Custom Lists, I found that you can ‘weigh’ options by adding multiples of them. E.g., a custom list containing Yes|No|No|No|No|No|No|No| will generate far more No’s than Yesses. Is that something that could be made into a feature perhaps?
Keep up the excellent work. I’m sold (and have donated).
